What is a Mattress Topper: Is It Right For You?

June 28, 2021 · Mattress Warehouse

Mattress toppers, or pads, have been around about as long as mattresses themselves. Some can be stylish, although the purpose of mattress toppers depends on your mattress. The question is, are mattress toppers worth it and, if so, what are they?

Mattress toppers are a layer of extra bedding that you put on top of your mattress to help protect and preserve it. These toppers can also be used for added comfort if you feel your mattress is a bit too firm.

Should I Get a Mattress Topper?

The question of whether you should get a mattress topper really depends on why you need it. There are two main reasons for buying a mattress topper: your mattress is getting older and is starting to show some dips or is just getting uncomfortable to sleep on; or your relatively new mattress feels like you’re sleeping on bricks, and you want a little bit of cushion.

Either way, you want to get a better night’s sleep without buying a new mattress. There are plenty of different types of mattress toppers out there – memory foam, latex, wool, etc., as well as different levels of thickness. Before you spend money on a new mattress topper, let’s take a look at some of the pros and cons of having a mattress topper.

Pros of a Mattress Topper

Do you have dips or soft spots on your mattress? Are coils starting to poke you while you sleep? Or is the mattress just too darned hard? This is ideal mattress topper conditions.

If you need just a little extra cushion, you can get a mattress topper that’s relatively thin. If you want extra comfort, you can go with a thicker mattress topper. They come in all sizes and levels of thickness, so you’ll want to find one that is the right size for your mattress with the desired thickness.

This can help you during the “break in” period of a new mattress (it usually takes about 30 days before a new mattress feels like it did in the showroom floor), as well as extend the life of your current mattress.

Cons of a Mattress Topper

While everything mentioned above is great, a mattress topper is only a temporary solution for an aging mattress. Little dips and being poked with coils can be helped by using a mattress topper, but it won’t help a mattress with a saggy middle.

Mattresses, if properly maintained, should last you at least 10 years or so. There are a lot of variables to add to this, however, such as how often do you rotate your mattress (should be every six months), and are you using a mattress protector to keep out sweat that can break down materials inside?

Once your mattress reaches the point of no return – saggy middle, coils poking out, you not getting a good night’s sleep – no mattress topper in the world is going to be able to fix it. Before you spend your money on a mattress topper, stop to think is it really going to help you sleep better on the mattress you currently sleep on. If the answer is no, then it’s time to think about investing in your sleep and health with a new mattress.
